The Constitution of the Manual
v0.1 DRAFT · 2026-07-30 · The rules under which The Field Manual is written, amended, and forked. This document is itself a pattern: a small system constituted in the open, so that the manual practises what it teaches.
Standing
The Field Manual is the companion to Purposive Accelerationism. It inherits the book's invariants and cites them by chapter; it never re-argues them, and nothing written here travels back. The book carries the argument at the argument's tempo; the manual carries the engineering at its own, versioned and revised as the parts improve.
The manual specifies means of holding ends open, never the ends themselves. No entry tells a founder what their polity is for; every entry tells a founder what must be decided, by whom, and what each option costs. Where an entry describes a mechanism, the mechanism regulates — it does not want, ask, choose or know. Purpose lives in reference values and constitutions, chosen by people, and the manual's language keeps it there.
Editorship
The manual is instantiated under a single editor, @jamie247. Editorship is a reference value, not a possession: it is declared here, it can be revised by amendment, and the history records every change of hands. The editor's warrant is narrow — to hold entries to the entry template, to the book's invariants, and to the two standing rules above. The editor does not own the patterns; they are the commons this constitution protects.
Contribution and amendment
Anyone may propose. A proposal is a change to a named entry (or a new entry), submitted through the manual's public repository as a pull request, so that every proposal, objection and revision is on the record and attributable. The editor accepts, declines, or returns a proposal with reasons; declined ones remain visible, and a recorded dissent travels with any entry whose rejection was contested. Co-authors are contributors whose accepted work on an entry earns a named credit on it — invitation into co-authorship travels through this same process, never around it.
Disputes escalate in one direction: from the entry's discussion thread, to a recorded editorial decision with reasons, to the remedy of last resort below. There is no appeal to authority beyond this document, because there is none.
The fork right
The manual can be forked, and says so. Its content is openly licensed, its history is public, and any person or group who concludes that the editorship has failed the patterns may take the whole of it and continue under different editorship. The fork right is not a regrettable leak; it is the mechanism that keeps the editor honest, priced into the design exactly as the book prescribes for every governed system. A manual whose users cannot leave is a manual whose editor cannot be trusted.
Versions
Releases are numbered and dated, and the version is visible on every page. Doctrine changes slowly and by amendment; patterns change by proposal; reference implementations carry their own dates and are expected to be replaced. An undated implementation is a defect. Nothing in the manual is canonical except the invariants it inherits from the book.
Amendment of this constitution
This document amends by the same process as any entry, with one difference: changes to the fork right, to open licensing, or to the public record of proposals require the change itself to be published for comment for a stated notice period before merge. The parts of the constitution that protect exit cannot be quietly amended by voice.
