› Pattern 2.1 — Identity and personhood
Personhood at the Door
Layer 2 · Identity and personhood · v0.1 DRAFT · 2026-07-30
Invariant
Where a domain reserves standing for humans — one vote, one membership, one voice per person — the line between a human and a bot must hold without surrendering who the human is. The invariant is inherited from Chapter Eleven of Purposive Accelerationism: proof of personhood holds the boundary while the self stays undisclosed.
Constitutive choices
- Where personhood is required at all. Most of a stack should not care: agents transact, contracts execute, and demanding humanity everywhere is surveillance wearing a safety argument. The founders must name the few places where one-per-human is load-bearing — the franchise, the commons claim, the jury — and leave the rest open to any key that performs.
- The tolerance for error in each direction. Every scheme trades false humans against excluded ones. A franchise can tolerate few duplicates; a discussion space can tolerate many before it fails. Setting this tolerance is a constitutive act, because it decides who the system is willing to wrongly turn away.
- What the proof discloses. Uniqueness alone, uniqueness plus jurisdiction, or a fuller credential. Every added attribute is a permanent widening of the door's memory, and the founders choose it knowing subtraction rarely happens.
Forces and capture risks
The pattern tilts toward the Individual vertex: it exists so that persons can hold standing that capital and compute cannot buy in bulk. Shipped alone, its risks come from both neighbours. Tilted to the Market, personhood becomes a credential sold and rented — sybil resistance priced in dollars is no resistance to the funded. Tilted to the Collective, the door becomes a register: whoever operates verification quietly acquires a census — the oldest instrument of the terminal collective. The named risk at the seam is the verifier itself — one issuer of humanity becomes a capture point for every domain that trusts it.
Pattern space
- Biometric uniqueness. A biological measurement proves one-human-once; zero-knowledge machinery keeps the measurement from becoming an identifier. Strongest uniqueness, heaviest trust in the measuring apparatus and its custodian.
- Web-of-trust attestation. Existing verified humans vouch for new ones, with stakes against fraud. No apparatus to capture; vulnerable to collusive vouching rings, and it inherits the geometry of the founding network.
- Credential import. A state or institutional identity is attested across the oracle seam, then blinded. Cheapest to bootstrap; imports the issuing institution's politics wholesale, and excludes exactly whom that institution excludes.
- Continuity-of-conduct. Personhood inferred from the long, expensive-to-fake texture of a lived account. No enrolment ceremony; weakest against patient, well-funded simulation, and strengthening it tends toward surveillance.
Plurality is the safety: a stack that accepts more than one proof degrades gracefully when any one of them is broken or captured.
Reference implementations (2026 — dated, replaceable)
Iris-based enrolment with zero-knowledge presentation of the World ID type; staked social-graph attestation of the Proof of Humanity lineage; government-credential blinding as piloted in several jurisdictions' digital-identity wallets. Configurations, not recommendations; each carries the capture profile of its pattern above.
Failure modes
The rented Sybil: uniqueness that money can multiply. The census: verification records accreting into a registry of the governed. The locked-out human: error tolerance set by engineers rather than founders, excluding the undocumented, the unbanked, the atypical body. The captured verifier: one issuer of humanity, then one veto over standing everywhere its proof is honoured.
Composition
Requires the parts inventory's proofs (personhood, zero-knowledge) and, where credentials are imported, inherits every caveat of the oracle seam. Feeds the association layer (membership that means one human) and the polity layer (a franchise that cannot be bought in bulk). The judgment layer depends on it wherever juries or arbiters must be persons; the meta-governor tests it wherever a right attaches to humans as such.
